MOTS-c peptide

What Is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a mitochondria derived peptide, a short chain of 16 amino acids encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Unlike most peptides, which are encoded in the nuclear genome, MOTS-c originates directly from the mitochondria, the cell's primary energy producing organelles.

This unique origin makes MOTS-c a subject of intense scientific curiosity. It acts as a mitokine, a signaling molecule released by mitochondria, capable of traveling from cells to the bloodstream and influencing systemic metabolic function.

How Does MOTS-c Work?

MOTS-c exerts its effects primarily through the AMPK (AMP activated protein kinase) pathway, a master regulator of cellular energy balance. When activated, AMPK:

By activating AMPK, MOTS-c essentially signals the body to shift into a more efficient, fat burning metabolic state, even under conditions of metabolic stress.

• Promotes glucose uptake in skeletal muscle
• Enhances fatty acid oxidation
• Suppresses lipid synthesis and storage
• Supports mitochondrial biogenesis

Key Areas of Research Interest

1. Metabolic Regulation and Insulin Sensitivity

Preclinical studies suggest MOTS-c may improve insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis. Research has shown that MOTS-c administration in animal models reduces diet induced obesity and improves metabolic markers, findings that have generated significant interest in the context of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes research.

2. Exercise Performance and Muscle Function

MOTS-c levels naturally rise in response to physical exercise. Research indicates it may enhance exercise capacity by improving mitochondrial efficiency and reducing oxidative stress in muscle tissue, making it a focal point in exercise physiology studies.

3. Aging and Longevity

MOTS-c levels decline with age, and researchers have observed a correlation between low MOTS-c levels and age related metabolic decline. Studies examining centenarians have found elevated MOTS-c levels, suggesting a potential link between this peptide and healthy longevity.

4. Cellular Stress Response

MOTS-c has demonstrated the ability to enhance cellular resilience under conditions of oxidative and metabolic stress, supporting the hypothesis that it plays a protective role at the mitochondrial level.
